Elora’s keen eyes gazed into the yawning darkness below, her druidic senses sharpening to unnatural clarity as she surveyed the sheer cavern wall descending toward an unknown, watery fate. In owl-form, she glided silently, feathers whispering against the stagnant subterranean air. Far above, Thorn, Maledurk, and Tempest waited anxiously, their fate now tethered to the subtle movements of her wings. The party’s narrow escape from Velkynvelve’s shadowy confines had left them drained, anxious, and desperate for respite.
Below stretched an expanse of cold, silent water whose surface barely rippled beneath unseen currents. Elora noted no welcoming ledge, no hidden alcove; the wall offered only a steep, treacherous descent. Swiftly returning to her companions, she landed gracefully upon Maledurk’s broad, scaled shoulder, communicating her findings in soft, careful tones.
“We have no choice but to risk the descent,” Thorn spoke first, resolve steeling his voice despite the faint tremor betraying his uncertainty.
Maledurk’s golden eyes sparked, remembering the enchanted vessel concealed within his belongings. “I have the boat,” he rumbled thoughtfully, “but the water’s far below. And climbing down this rock face… It’ll be tricky.”
“Tricky, but not impossible,” Thorn said, already evaluating the cliff with calculating eyes, mentally preparing himself for the perilous descent. “With the enchanted rope, I can manage. But landing straight in the water without a foothold—”
“Allow me,” Maledurk interrupted, embers flaring gently along the edges of his scales. In a swift, brilliant motion, he unfolded fiery wings that illuminated the darkness, banishing shadows across the cavern’s high walls. “I’ll bring the boat below. Hold tight.”
Maledurk plunged downward, the enchanted boat grasped firmly, his fiery form descending like a comet through the gloom. Tempest, moved by his courage, mirrored his gesture, azure wings of chaotic magic bursting forth as she gracefully followed, laughter mingling with the echoes of her flight.
Thorn secured the magical rope, the enchanted length obediently anchoring itself as he began the careful climb, hands gripping tightly against slick, weathered stone. The chill of the cavern bit through his gloves, but he forced his focus downward to Maledurk, whose blazing silhouette stood below, unfolding the boat upon the black water’s calm surface.
The boat unfurled dramatically into a sturdy vessel, larger than expected, nearly filling the narrow waterway below. Maledurk steadied it, his draconic strength tested by the craft’s heft. Thorn leapt down from the rope’s end, landing neatly inside the gently rocking craft. Moments later, Tempest descended, her carefree spirit momentarily tempered by the gravity of their escape.
With companions safely aboard, Elora perched at the boat’s prow, watchful and alert as they began drifting northeastward along the subterranean stream, away from their drow pursuers.
Yet the silence of their escape did not last. As the waterway narrowed and their boat scraped softly against the shore, distant sounds of shouting and hurried footsteps reached their ears. The drow had discovered their flight.
“Hurry,” Thorn whispered urgently. “We must move.”
Abandoning the craft momentarily, they sprinted through winding, cramped corridors hewn naturally from the stone, pursued relentlessly by unseen enemies. Elora’s owl form flitted anxiously ahead, scouting twists and forks, the faint glow of her companions’ hurried steps far behind. The tunnel walls pressed in, claustrophobic, damp with condensation, until at last the adventurers stumbled breathlessly into a cavern teeming with luminescent fungi, each glowing cluster casting pools of dim, spectral light upon the stone floor.
Pausing only briefly, Thorn surveyed their surroundings. Wagon tracks—deep grooves carved into the earth—led northward into another passageway. But another path sloped downward, curving intriguingly out of sight, and carried with it the unmistakable murmur of waves.
“The water again,” Maledurk muttered thoughtfully, nostrils flaring. “Could be an escape.”
Thorn nodded decisively. “Toward the waves. If there’s even a chance it leads us upward or outward, we must take it.”
They darted down the chosen passage, moving swiftly toward the growing sound. The tunnel widened dramatically into a vast cavern, its ceiling impossibly high, arching upward into darkness. Before them stretched the Darklake—its immense, still surface occasionally disturbed by gentle, unearthly waves.
Without hesitation, Maledurk drew forth the magical boat once more. This time, its size fit perfectly within the grandeur of the subterranean sea. Launching into the placid water, the party quickly propelled themselves far from shore, hearts beating in tense unison as their pursuers emerged too late, frustrated shadows fading into insignificance behind them.
Adrift in the Darklake’s solemn embrace, the adventurers shared a weary silence, the gravity of their near-capture settling upon each heart differently. Tempest, ever mercurial, soon succumbed to sleep’s embrace, her breathing rhythmic and untroubled. Thorn maintained vigil at the prow, thoughts churning in quiet contemplation, strategizing for the trials yet to come. Maledurk, tireless protector, gazed out across the dark water, flames subsiding to a comforting glow around his scales.
Elora resumed her elven form, allowing herself a rare moment of relief. She closed her eyes, sensing the faint whispers of natural magic, even here, in this forgotten subterranean realm. Her companions were safe—at least for now—and in that moment, beneath the unfeeling stone and the indifferent stars hidden far above, she found hope rekindling within her.
Together, beneath the solemn expanse of rock and silence, the Nefarious Do-Gooders rested—each adventurer quietly aware that their respite was fleeting, but precious. Whatever awaited them next, they would face it united, their resolve tempered stronger than ever by the shadows they had escaped and the darkness yet awaiting them on the uncertain path home.
Session Notes
- The session began with a recap: The party escaped their cell in Velkynvelve, navigated part of the drow outpost, retrieved their gear from an attic storeroom, and alerted some guards. They subdued one guard, locked him away, and retreated to plan their descent to the water below using Maledurk’s folding boat. They currently have their equipment but haven’t rested, lacking spell slots and daily abilities.
- The immediate goal is to descend the cliff face to the water below the drow outpost.
- The party discusses using ropes. Thorn possesses a magic rope that can attach and detach itself on command.
- Elora suggests scouting the descent route by transforming into a bird using her Wild Shape ability.
- There’s a brief discussion about the darkvision capabilities of eagles versus owls. Elora confirms she retains her elven darkvision regardless of her form.
- Elora Wild Shapes into a raptor (functionally treated as an owl for darkvision) and flies down the cliff face.
- Elora’s Reconnaissance:
- The cliff wall offers no ledges or caves suitable for resting on the way down.
- The rock face has sufficient cracks and handholds that free-climbing would be possible, though difficult. Descending with a rope should be relatively easy.
- The rock appears to be naturally eroded limestone or granite, not deliberately carved.
- Below is a body of water (a subterranean river or lake) fed by a waterfall. The water flows out to the northeast.
- The water seems deep, as the current isn’t excessively strong despite the waterfall’s inflow.
- The cliff descends directly to the water’s edge; there is no shore or ledge at the bottom on this side.
- Elora flies back up and reports her findings to the party.
- They discuss the logistics of descent. Thorn’s magic rope might not reach the water completely from their current position, but it might be close enough for someone in the boat to grab. Thorn considers re-anchoring the rope partway down or attaching it to the boat itself once deployed.
- Maledurk remembers his racial ability as a Brass Dragonborn allows him to fly for a short duration once per day. Tempest (Blue Dragonborn) also has this capability.
- Revised Descent Plan Execution:
- Maledurk activates his dragon wings and flies down, carrying the folded boat.
- He reaches the water’s surface and speaks the command word to unfold the boat, choosing the larger, 24-foot sailing vessel option. The boat is substantial, occupying about two-thirds of the waterway’s width at that point.
- Elora, still in owl form, flies down and perches on the boat.
- Maledurk flies back up to the ledge.
- Tempest sprouts her dragon wings and flies down to the boat.
- Maledurk carries Thorn down to the boat.
- The party is now assembled in the large boat on the water beneath the drow outpost.
- They begin to drift slowly downstream, towards the northeast.
- They observe their surroundings from the boat:
- To the port side (left), a shoreline slopes gradually upwards. Elora may have glimpsed a passage leading northwest at the top of this slope during her earlier descent.
- Ahead, the waterway appears to terminate against a solid wall. The water likely flows out through an unseen underwater channel.
- The boat eventually drifts into the shoreline near the wall, becoming wedged and unable to proceed further on the water in this direction. A passage leads away along the shoreline to the northeast.
- The party decides to disembark onto the beach-like shoreline. Maledurk uses the command word to fold the boat back into its portable form and puts it away.
- Shortly after landing, they hear shouting and noises from the drow outpost above and behind them, indicating their escape has been fully discovered.
- Further Scouting: Elora, still an owl, flies to get a better view of the large cavern they are in.
- To the southwest, the cavern narrows again. She spots another potential narrow passage leading out in that direction. Near that end of the cavern, she sees figures that appear to be digging or mining. She also spots a large cage-like elevator descending from the upper levels, carrying five armed figures (likely drow guards).
- To the northwest (along the shoreline they are near), she sees a passage opening, roughly 8-10 feet wide.
- Looking back towards the drow outpost structure built into the stalactites above, she sees more bridges, walkways, and cave entrances, confirming a larger presence than they initially encountered. She also observes movement within the spider webs connecting structures.
- Seeing the guards descending via the elevator, the party feels pressured to leave the area quickly. They decide the northwest passage is their best immediate escape route.
- The party hurries into the northwest passage. As they move deeper, they hear the sounds of the elevator reaching the cavern floor and footsteps indicating pursuit.
- The passage is winding, varying in width, sometimes requiring single file movement. They proceed quickly, Elora flying short distances ahead to scout.
- The passage forks, presenting paths to the right and straight/left. Elora quickly checks the right fork, finding it continues as a twisting passage.
- While Elora is scouting, the rest of the party, anxious about the pursuers, decides not to wait and proceeds down the right-hand fork. Elora quickly flies back and rejoins them.
- They continue down the right fork, hearing their pursuers following the same path, likely tracking their footprints.
- Thorn attempts to obscure their tracks using his Mage Hand cantrip, making a Survival check. The effort is unsuccessful; it smooths the ground but creates an equally obvious trail, like something being dragged.
- The passage eventually opens into a large, new cavern illuminated by dim, ambient light from various glowing fungi (yellows and greens) growing on the walls and floor.
- Fungus Cavern:
- The cavern contains large, tree-like fungi identified by Elora as Zuthkwood, which is known to be as hard as wood. There are numerous Zuthkwood stumps, suggesting recent harvesting.
- This cavern is a major intersection, with roughly ten different passages leading out at ground level.
- Higher up the cavern walls (around 40-50 feet), more cave openings are visible, possibly leading to other passages, but there are no stairs or ladders leading up to them.
- Investigating the Crossroads: The party looks for clues about which path to take. Thorn and Elora make checks.
- Thorn deduces the harvested Zuthkwood was likely transported back towards the drow outpost they fled.
- He identifies two more promising exits:
- One passage heading generally north shows signs of wagon tracks.
- Another passage heading southwest slopes downwards. From this direction, they hear the distinct sound of waves lapping on a shore.
- Decision: They speculate the northern passage with wagon tracks might lead to more drow activity or a dead end related to Zuthkwood harvesting. The sound of waves from the southwest passage seems more promising for escape or finding a way out of the Underdark. They choose the southwest passage.
- They briefly discuss trying to cover their tracks again. Elora considers using her owl wings to stir up dust or making numerous bird tracks to confuse pursuers, but they decide it would take too long and opt to keep moving.
- They head down the southwest passage. It slopes downwards and bends around. The sound of waves grows louder.
- The passage opens into an immense cavern, so vast they cannot see the ceiling or the far walls. The cavern contains a huge body of water – the Darklake.
- The Darklake Shore:
- Gentle waves lap against the shoreline where the passage emerges.
- The cavern is dimly lit by bioluminescent fungi on distant walls.
- The party members rely on their darkvision to see.
- They decide to use the boat again to traverse the lake. Maledurk retrieves the folded boat and deploys the large, 24-foot version.
- They launch the boat and begin rowing out into the vast, dark expanse of the underground lake.
- Losing Pursuers: Elora flies up as an owl to keep watch. She observes four drow warriors emerge from the passage onto the Darklake shore. Seeing the party already far out on the water and having no boat of their own, the drow look around, choose a direction along the shoreline (to the right), and depart. The party believes they have successfully evaded pursuit for the time being.
- Taking a Long Rest: Feeling relatively safe on the vast lake and needing to recover, the party finds a suitable spot near some rock formations rising from the water. They anchor the boat.
- The party successfully completes a long rest over approximately eight hours. They regain all their hit points, spell slots, and other daily resources.
- The session concludes with the party rested and recovered, afloat on their boat in the middle of the immense Darklake, ready to decide their next course of action to escape the Underdark.
